Ferris Bueller's Weekend Off
We went to Chicago this weekend with Jose's dad and sister, and then we met up with his brother and wife there in Chicago. Overall it was a really fun weekend, although dinners were a little bit stressful because of Gabi. We took off Friday and drove up early Friday morning. We made into Chicago's entrance by around noon on Friday (we gain an hour from Chicago) but of course that's when we hit sooo much traffic.
When we finally made it we had lunch at Cheesecake Factory and then took the city boat tour. We had done the architecture tour a couple of years ago and of course that one was a lot more interesting, but this one was good just because of the fact that you spent so much of it out on the lake looking back into the city scape.
That night Jose and I had to hit the sack early because by the time the rest of the group was ready for dinner it was too late for us to take out Gabi. Which was OK I guess because otherwise the fact that we ate so much during the weekend would've been severely compounded. We ended up sleeping 4 on the same bed that night (and the next one!). Jose, me, Jose's sister and Gabi. Gabi we kept putting down on her play pen but she woke up both nights in the middle of the night and we had to bring her into the bed with us, probably because of the fact that the Hotel Allerton has the loudest toilets I ever heard in my life, and also due to some snoring relatives who I won't mention by name for fear of being disowned.
The next day we had breakfast at the Corner Bakery and then walked around Millennium Park and then headed to the Art Museum, after much discussion about the merits of the Art Museum vs. the Field Museum of Natural History. Once at the museum as soon as we hit the Monets I said, wait a second, this is where they filmed Ferris Bueller! So we took this picture in memoriam of that scene in the movie where they are staring at the Monet so intently.
Later that afternoon we left Gabi with her grandpa and aunt to go to Wrigley Field for a Cubs vs. Mets game. When we hit the park is when I realized that we were truly re-living Ferris' Day Off! We'd been to the museum, we'd explored the city and dined excellent Chicago food, and we even made it to the baseball park to yell some "hey batter batter batter swing batter"!
Saturday night we ATTEMPTED to go to dinner at a tapas place called 1492 very close to our hotel, which Jose and I have been to before and we really like. Unfortunately Gabi wasn't in her best behavior so we had to duck out early and leave the rest of the family there while Gabi calmed down. At least Jose got something from Banana Republic while Gabi fell asleep in her stroller in the middle of the pouring rain...
Sunday morning we had breakfast again at Corner Bakery and then headed back home for a seemingly endless car ride back. Gabi was so desperate at one point I somehow thought it was a good idea to let her play with my wedding band set (since she asked so nicely!) and she dropped my wedding band down one of the holes in the car seat. Way to go Ivette. I can totally see it through the cracks in the car seat, I know it's there! I just can't get to it and don't know exactly how to go about it, so if anyone has some suggestions please feel free. For now I'm wearing fake Target wedding rings.
My biggest accomplishment for the weekend was walking SEVERAL times past the Apple Store (our hotel was right around the corner) and not giving in and buying an iPhone.
